Hernia

Defects in the muscles of the abdominal wall, called hernias, can occasionally be seen by inspection alone but are usually detected and best evaluated by palpation. These defects can be congenital (present at birth) or acquired after birth (as a result of abdominal surgery) and are usually not painful. There are several types, some of which will be discussed in a later chapter. Hernias, in general, pose no immediate threat, but since at times the intestines can bulge into the hernia and get blocked off, most doctors prefer to repair hernias on an elective basis.
